Stephen Ministry at SLBC

Posted by Davey Gibson on with 2 Comments

In Galatians 6:2, Paul writes that as Christians we are to "Share each other's burdens...."  Stephen Ministry began in 1975 to equip congregations in fulfilling this command.  Simply put: Stephen Ministry is a one-on-one care ministry led by trained lay people who compassionately walk alongside those who are hurting.  Check out a testimony video from SLBC members who have been involved in Stephen Ministry in the past.

Stephen Ministers are SLBC members—Christian men and women—trained to provide one-to-one care to people experiencing a difficult time in life.  They receive 50 hours of training from our Stephen Leaders prior to becoming Stephen Ministers.  Click here for an application to be trained as a Stephen Minister.  Bring completed application to the church office or email to   Training will begin in September 2019.

Stephen Leaders are SLBC members who have attended a 6-day leadership training course and are responsible for Stephen Ministry at our church.  They help build awareness, recruit and train ministers, meet with potential care receivers to match them with a Stephen Minister, and provide ongoing supervision and continuing education.

Care Receivers are anyone in our church or community who are currently receiving pastoral care from a Stephen Minister.  These are people struggling through a difficult time in life—experiencing grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, or some other life crisis.  In the caring relationship, confidentiality is held in the highest regard and men are always matched with men and women with women.  If the care receiver has needs that exceed the scope of Stephen Ministry, a referral to the appropriate mental health professional or other resource will be made.  Due to the need for trained Stephen Ministers before we can match with a care receiver, we will start offering Stephen Ministry care at the beginning of next year - February 2020.

For additional information, see the Stephen Ministry website or contact the church office or email:

An interest meeting for all who would like more information will be on Sundays, July 21 & 28 at 11am in the Groom's Room.

Coach- Yes, if you are able to meet with a care receiver and your Stephen Minister group each week, you can serve. I'd be happy to talk with you more about it. Thanks!
