Dear Church family,
My family and I want to thank you for the box filled with gift cards to area restaurants. I took the box back to San Angelo with me last weekend so the kids and Alyson could see for themselves how generous and kind you are. They were amazed at the number of cards and variety of restaurants represented. We had fun reading your notes and learning about the restaurants here in Sugar Land. We loved that some of you went out of your way to champion a restaurant you enjoy. The passion some of you have for a favorite eatery is impressive!
Your notes reminded me about the power of an invitation. When someone we know invites us to try something they love, we pay attention. Facebook and other social media sites capitalize on this fact. They know that recommendations from a friend are worth far more than any generic form of advertising. That’s why companies pay big bucks to try to get you to like and recommend their products to your online friends.
The power of an invitation from someone we know works in other areas of our lives, as well. Reaching our neighbors and friends for Christ sometimes can be as simple as offering an invitation to come and see not the product, but the person, who has changed our lives. That strategy worked for the Samaritan woman in John 4. After having a life-altering conversation with Jesus, she went back to her neighbors invited them to “Come and see the man who told me everything I ever did.” At this simple invitation, the whole town went out to see Jesus for themselves.
I’m grateful for all the invitations to try your favorite restaurants. My family looks forward to trying them for ourselves. I’m sure we’ll have good conversations about our favorite dishes in the months and years ahead. I also trust that our neighbors will have even higher praise for our Savior if we’ll be faithful to invite them to come and see the one who has made all the difference in our lives.
