It is my estimate that a third to a half of our church members have evacuated the area due to flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. Many more remain in their homes with floodwaters threatening. The Brazos is predicted to crest later today and remain high for days to come.
It looks like travel will be extremely dangerous today, if not impossible. For many of us, all we can do now is pray and wait....
My own family has taken shelter with Chris Curran’s extended family in Katy. What a gift to be taken in by almost strangers just because we are in need. There is lots of trouble in the world, but there is also much grace.
I am reminded of a powerful verse from Lamentations that comes in the midst of great sorrow:
22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him.”
25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;
26 it is good to wait quietly
for the salvation of the Lord (Lamentations 3:22-26).
I am praying for you today as we wait on the Lord. May the levees hold. May the floodwaters recede. May our faith persevere as we love one another through these difficult days.
Continue to check in on one another. I have been amazed at the offers of homes to those in need. Chris and I are glad to do all we can to help connect people in need with those who can help.
